Recently my friend Mary Ann came for a play date in my studio. We had lunch and then spent the better part of the afternoon creating monoprints. Monoprinting is the process of applying paint or ink to a surface, creating textures or applying masks and producing a unique print that cannot be duplicated. Every monoprint is a 1:1. For my artist friends reading this blog, I use a Geli plate and liquid acrylic paints applied with the help of a brayer and a variety of printing blocks and mark making tools. My prints are on fabric and on tissue paper.
Yesterday, I pulled out my Geli plate again and printed some very unique cards printed on watercolour paper. I also discovered that I can print on top of the monoprints with my bubble jet printer so some of them will appear with one of my drawings printed on top.
Monoprinting to me is like the life we all lead. No one moment can really be repeated. I found while I was printing that the prints improved with practice. In fact, the best print of the day was the last one that I have attached to this blog. Not sure how I will finish this piece but I do love the colours and how it has movement and texture. The less successful pieces can be modified and improved upon. I can block print on top or do a second monoprint on top of the first one. Another option is to cut up the piece in the case of fabric or tear up the papers and use them in a collage. There is always a way to improve, revise or revisit. I find when I put something away for a while it looks very different when I look at it again. Sometimes, it even looks better.
We experience unique moments everyday of our life. Sometimes the events in our lives are not all that happy or exciting but they are what is leading to the next better day and experience. Learning from the past and improving what we chose to do makes life hopeful and, in the end, fulfilling. We can revise our outlook, give thanks for what we have and appreciate our daily experiences. Sometimes looking back at less than happy moments from a distance we can actually see the humour in the situation. Enjoying the memories of happy times and being thankful that you experienced them sets a positive attitude that help us all embrace and enjoy the rest of our unique adventures.
