“Good things come in small packages”, I have heard so many times. When I was an adult
student at McMaster University one of my drawing instructors gave us an interesting
homework assignment. We had to make 2” by 2” view finder. We then had to go outside and
look at the landscape through the view finder and do a pencil drawing that was 2”X2”. At the
beginning of the next class we put our work on the wall for a critique. My small drawings
turned out so well they could be seen in detail from across the room.
Turns out I had a flare forcreating small drawings. My professor suggested I do more of them. Life carried on with new assignments and I never did get back to making more small drawings. This year I decided to try my hand at small paintings and discovered that I am not half bad at creating paintings in a small format. The paintings included in this blog were created for a friend who needed gifts that spoke about Canada and would be easy to ship overseas.
We often take small things for granted. Small gestures of kindness like holding the door for
someone or letting them go ahead of you in the check-out line because they just have one or
two items makes a big impression. Donating small amounts to the Salvation Army at this time
of year adds up to big support for families in need. Taking a little time to call your friend who
has been recently widowed and offering a listening ear makes a very big difference to their
much-altered life. Being grateful for your blessings no matter how small puts a positive spin on
your day. It’s important to notice the little things in your life. If you look after the little things
the big things will look after themselves.
My small paintings are an acknowledgement and reflection of the small things in life. Enjoy.
