old fashioned door knocker

Doors have always interested me, mainly for what they hide.  Door decorations on the other hand, tell a lot about the person behind the door.  The art piece attached to this blog is called Sienna Door Knocker.  This ancient brass door knocker serves a couple of purposes.  It is attached to a solid wood door and when used to knock would surely summon the occupants from any part of their house.  A craftsman of some skill created this stern-faced fellow to perhaps deter some guests.  Door knockers were popular many years ago and are now replaced by electronic doorbells and buzzers.  Some of the new-fangled doorbells even have cameras that allow the occupant to see the doorbell ringer before the door is opened, perhaps even when they aren’t home the homeowner can take note of who is at their door by using an app on their phone.

Modern door knockers are much smaller and a lot less functional.  Really, they are often just a faux brass decoration.  Instead of a stern brass face looking out on the world, people these days adorn their front doors with all kinds of décor.  My own door, currently has a homemade Ukrainian flag made by my friend Marianne, bless her soul.  At Christmas, I replace the flag with a suitable seasonal wreath.

Around my neighbourhood some people display a wreath to denote each season.  Often wreaths are floral in nature with the colours coordinating with the time of year.  Bright flowers, autumn leaves and spruce boughs welcome visitors at various times.  Sometimes the door decoration is a flag that advertises the owner’s allegiance to their favourite sports team.  During elections these can be replaced with political party flags.  Homemade door decorations are always the best as someone took the time to create something beautiful or meaningful to them.  I have seen Holly Berries, Easter Eggs, Bells, Ribbons, Stuffed Animals and Tulle used to make door decorations.  Welcome is often a word displayed on a wreath and gives guests an immediate impression of the reception they will receive when the door is opened.

Sometimes at Christmas, I have even seen people cover their whole door with wrapping paper and a giant bow.  They clearly love the season and celebrate in style.  The next time you are walking around your neighbourhood, see how many beautiful door decorations you can spot.  Someone has taken the time to brighten our world and has also told us something about themselves.
